Trey Hardee withdraws from the World Athletics Championships in Beijing with a back injury.

Trey Hardee has withdrawn from the World Athletics Championships in Beijing with a back injury.

The 2009 and 2011 gold medallist injured his lower back on his final attempt in the long jump, the second event of the two-day competition, and withdrew from the shot.

"I tried everything to try to make it through but it just wasn't meant to be," Hardee, who came in to the competition with the year's top score of 8,725 points, told reporters.

American teammate Ashton Eaton is currently leading the way in the decathlon with 2,830 points.
