Steve Backley heaps praises on "incredible" Greg Rutherford

Steve Backley hails the "incredible performance" of Greg Rutherford after the long jumper made history with victory at the World Athletics Championships.

Two-time world silver medallist Steve Backley has heaped praise on Greg Rutherford after the long jumper made history at the World Athletics Championships this afternoon.

Rutherford finally added a world title to his Olympic, European and Commonwealth crowns, becoming only the fifth British athlete to ever hold all four major athletics titles at once.

The 28-year-old joins an elite list of Linford Christie, Sally Gunnell, Daley Thompson and Jonathan Edwards in achieving the grand slam, and Backley was impressed with his performance as he stormed to the gold.

"It was a chance to deliver something and be part of an exclusive list. Rutherford comes away with another gold," the former javelin thrower told BBC Sport.

"It was an incredible performance and perhaps his best. It was amazing how the rest of the world folded. He stood strong and came good."

Rutherford also declared his performance to be the best that he has ever produced.
