Chess applies for Olympic spot

Chess, snooker and squash are three of the 26 sports hoping for inclusion by the IOC at the 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo.

Sports hoping for inclusion at the 2020 Olympic Games have submitted their applications to the International Olympic Committee.

Chess, snooker and bridge are just three of the 26 sports to have applied for inclusion in the Tokyo Games.

The applicants will be narrowed down to a shortlist on June 22, with a final decision made by the IOC on which sports to include in August 2016.

However, head of the organising committee Yoshiro Mori told a press conference: "There are sports on this list that are not done in Japan, and we can't spend a lot of money on venues for these."

The Japanese sport of sumo, tug of war and squash will also be hoping for inclusion at the Games.
