Weir impressive on Commonwealth Games debut

David Weir made easy work of qualifying for the men's Para-sport 1,500m T54 final on his Commonwealth Games debut.

The six-time Paralympic champion broke clear of the pack midway through the final lap at Hampden Park to win his heat in a time of 3:28.23.

Team England teenager Will Smith is also into Thursday's medal race after finishing third to Australia's Kurt Fearnley (3:19.64) in the second semi-final, where Ghana's Patrick Obeng crashed out when in a good position.

In the women's event, English trio Jade Jones, Lauren Rowles and Shelly Woods, who won her heat, all safely advanced to the final and will be joined there by Scotland's Megan Dawson Farrell and Sammi Kinghorn.

Weir won four gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics.
