The defending champion, who has been battling with form and fitness in the past year, struck the first hurdle firmly, and was eventually forced to abandon his bid for qualification after losing his balance, with Shane Brathwaite going on to finish behind heat winner Andrew Riley of Jamaica.

However, there was some good news for his England teammates as Will Sharman finished second in his respective heat behind Ryan Brathwaite to secure his progress into the final.

Lawrence Clarke will also compete in Tuesday night's final after claiming the runner-up spot in heat two.
