Jay Gruden: 'Robert Griffin III can return to best form'

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden believes that quarterback Robert Griffin III can return to his form of 2012 next season.

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden is upbeat over the future of quarterback Robert Griffin III despite his struggles over the past two seasons.

The 25-year-old was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2012 and named offensive rookie of the year, but a devastating knee injury sustained in the playoffs has affected his play ever since.

Griffin has struggled immensely in the 2013 and 2014 campaigns, and was even benched for spells in favour of Kirk Cousins and later Colt McCoy.

However, Gruden feels that the quarterback will bounce back in the 2015 campaign under the guidance of new quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh.

"He's positive, he's excited, he's healthy and raring to go," Gruden told reporters.

"He had his first discussion with new quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh, and that went well. I think moving forward he's got the starting job right now and hopefully he takes it and runs with it."

Griffin threw for 1,694 yards along with four touchdowns to six interceptions last season.
