Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll: 'Attempted onside kick was a miscue'

Carroll: 'Attempted onside kick was a miscue'

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has said that his side's attempted onside kick in their overtime defeat to the St Louis Rams was down to a miscue from kicker Steven Hauschka.

After playing a 31-31 tie after four quarters of their NFC West clash, the Seahawks lost the toss and were forced to kick to Jeff Fisher's men at the start of the overtime period.

Hauschka appeared to hit the ball for an onside kick, but Carroll has insisted that was not the designed play and the scripted kick should have been hit deeper.

"That's not what was supposed to happen there," Carroll told reporters. "We were kicking the ball in a certain area of the field.

"We didn't hit it right. We just missed it, we didn't execute the kick right. That's all. Simple as that."

A field goal from Greg Zuerlein put the Rams ahead and a stop of Marshawn Lynch on fourth down handed the home side the victory at Edward Jones Dome.
