Report: Colin Kaepernick eyeing $18m-per-year contract

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick reportedly wants an $18m-a-year contract to stay with the club.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is eyeing a new contract at the club worth $18m (£10m) a year , according to a report.

The 26-year-old is entering the first year that he can negotiate a new deal with the 49ers, after being selected by the club in the second round of the 2011 Draft.

Kaepernick will earn just $973,000 (£584,000) for the 2014 season, which is among the lowest salaries for a starting quarterback in the NFL.

The player and his agent are looking for a deal in the region of $18m, which is roughly the same contract as the Chicago Bears' Jay Cutler, but less than that of the $20m earned by the Baltimore Ravens' Joe Flacco, reports the Boston Globe.

Kaepernick threw for 3,197 yards along with 21 touchdowns to eight interceptions in the 2013 season.
