Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trent Dilfer says that Alex Smith could be playing for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013.

Trent Dilfer has said that the Kansas City Chiefs are interested in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for Alex Smith.

The quarterback is understood to want a move away from Candlestick Park after losing his place in the starting lineup to Colin Kaepernick.

Dilfer, who was a teammate of Smith between 2006 and 2007, told the San Francisco Chronicle: "I think [Chiefs head coach Andy Reid] wants to change a little bit offensively.

"Alex is a guy with a huge capacity. You can give him a lot and he can handle it. Andy has always been able to get the most out of guys that don't have extreme talent."

Smith has also been linked to moves to the Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals.
