The San Francisco 49ers are expected to try to trade Alex Smith during the NFL off-season.

Alex Smith will be leaving the San Francisco 49ers before the start of the 2013 NFL season, a report has suggested.

The quarterback lost his place in the starting lineup during the 2012 season to Colin Kaepernick after sustaining a concussion.

NFL.com says that the Super Bowl finalists will look to trade the top pick from the 2005 Draft, but will be happy to release him if they cannot secure an early deal.

Since being benched, Smith has been linked to moves to the Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs.
