San Francisco 49ers sign defensive end Jermaine Cunningham

Jermaine Cunningham signs a deal with the San Francisco 49ers weeks after being cut by the New England Patriots.

The San Francisco 49ers have completed the signing of free agent defensive end Jermaine Cunningham.

The 25-year-old was on the market following his release by the New England Patriots as part of their roster cutdown in August.

Jim Harbaugh's side moved to sign Cunningham as a means of replacing linebacker Aldon Smith, who is currently seeking help for his personal problems after being placed on the non-football injury list by the team.

Cunningham registered three and a half sacks during his three years with the Patriots.
