Williams signs with Steelers

Running back DeAngelo Williams has signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 31-year-old was released by the Carolina Panthers at the end of the 2014 season due to his high salary cap number, ending his nine-year stay with the NFC South outfit.

Mike Tomlin's men have moved to sign Williams on a deal until the end of the 2016 campaign worth $4m [£2.7m], and he will serve as backup to primary back Le'Veon Bell.

Williams said on Twitter: "Excited about signing with the Steelers! Trust me when I say that I've got a LOT of gas left in the tank."

The back recorded 6,846 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns in his nine seasons with the Panthers.
