Raiders release quarterback Schaub

The Oakland Raiders have confirmed that they have released veteran quarterback Matt Schaub.

The 33-year-old was brought into the club in a trade deal from the Houston Texans last year as the Raiders used a sixth-round Draft pick to acquire his services.

However, Schaub was beaten out for the starting job by rookie Derek Carr, and when he did eventually get on the field late in the season he struggled immensely.

The AFC West club have taken the decision to release him to save up to $5.5m (£3.7m) against their salary cap after adding fellow quarterback Christian Ponder to their roster last week.

Schaub has thrown for 24,311 yards as well as 130 touchdowns to 86 interceptions in his 11 years in the NFL.
