The New England Patriots have placed running back Shane Vereen on their injured reserve - designated to return list.

Vereen dislocated a bone in his wrist during his side's season-opening win against the Buffalo Bills but finished the game.

However, his injury required surgery and as a result the 24-year-old has been placed on the IR return list, which means he will not be available until week nine of the season.

Vereen was drafted 56th overall by the Patriots in the 2011 Draft.
