NFL admits to Husain Abdullah penalty mistake

NFL admits Abdullah mistake

The NFL has conceded that Kansas City Chiefs star Husain Abdullah should not have received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty after bowing in prayer after a touchdown.

Abdullah's celebration came during the 41-14 victory over the New England Patriots on Monday night, as he claimed a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.

According to Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 (d), "Players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations or demonstrations while on the ground".

However, an NFL spokesman later released a statement insisting that Abdullah, a devout Muslim, should not have been penalised for a "religious expression".

Abdullah told reporters after the game that he thought he had received the penalty for the slide, with coach Andy Reid sharing his view.
