Serena Williams cruises into round two at Wimbledon

Serena Williams begins her Wimbledon title defence with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Grand Slam debutant Amra Sadikovic.

Serena Williams has begun her Wimbledon title defence with a straight-sets victory over Amra Sadikovic this afternoon.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion overcame her Swiss opponent, making her debut at a Grand Slam, 6-2 6-4 to cruise into the second round.

Sadikovic did almost create a memorable moment in the very first game when she earned two break points, but Williams survived the early scare and quickly took control by racing into a 3-0 lead.

The world number 148 continued to hold her own against her illustrious opponent, but she couldn't find the killer shot on a number of occasions and Williams took the opener with her fourth set point in just over half an hour.

Sadikovic did get her break of serve in the second set to briefly move into a 2-1 lead, only for Williams to break straight back and restore parity.

The American then wrapped up the match at the second time of asking, setting up a meeting with either Christina McHale or Daniela Hantuchova in the next round.
