Garbine Muguruza battles into Wimbledon semi-finals

Spanish 20th seed Garbine Muguruza beats Timea Bacsinszky 7-5 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Garbine Muguruza has reached the Wimbledon semi-finals thanks to a gritty straight-sets win over Timea Bacsinszky.

The victory has seen Muguruza qualify for the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

There was little to separate the players at the start of the opening set as Muguruza's power was nullified by 15th seed Bacsinszky's energy and combativeness.

Muguruza, who is seeded 20th, was forced to save two break points at 2-2 before she finally breached the Bacsinszky defence to take the set 7-5.

The second set was a scrappier affair as the two women exchanged breaks in the opening two games.

Swiss Bacsinszky threatened to seize the initiative midway through the set as she brought up a break point, but Muguruza showed her defensive qualities by saving it before going on to convert a precious break point of her own and closing out the contest 7-5 6-3.
