Venus Williams into round three at US Open

Two-time US Open champion Venus Williams cruises into the third round at Flushing Meadows with a straight-sets victory over Julia Goerges.

Venus Williams has booked her place in the third round of the US Open courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Julia Goerges.

The world number six needed less than 80 minutes to power past her German opponent 6-2 6-3, setting up a meeting with either Laura Siegemund or Nicole Gibbs.

It was Goerges who got off to the better start, though, breaking Williams in the very first game, only to be broken straight back as the opening set returned to serve.

Williams, a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows, was able to create a break point in each of Goerges's service games, and the German only managed to save one as Williams won the set with four straight games to take it 6-2.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner then won four of the opening five games in the second set to take complete control of the contest, before sealing the match 6-3 with the second of her match points.
