Simona Halep thrashes Kirsten Flipkens at US Open

Simona Halep misses one point for a double-bagel before registering an emphatic win over Kirsten Flipkens in the US Open first round.

Simona Halep has progressed through to the second round of the US Open with an emphatic win against Kirsten Flipkens.

The fifth seed prevailed by a 6-0 6-2 scoreline, but that does not tell the whole story as the Romanian missed out on the double-bagel.

After breezing through the first set in 24 minutes, Halep established a 5-0 advantage in the second before bringing up a match point for the whitewash on her own serve.

However, Flipkens won three points in a row to get a game on the board and although she then held serve for the first time in the contest, Halep served it out to reach the last 64 as the clock reached the hour mark.
