Andy Murray to be named Great Britain's flag bearer for Olympic opening ceremony

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will reportedly be named as Great Britain's flag bearer for Friday's opening ceremony at the Rio Olympics.

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will reportedly be named as Great Britain's flag bearer for Friday's Olympics opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.

The Scotsman, who won singles gold and mixed doubles silver at London 2012, is expected to lead out approximately 55 British athletes at the Maracana Stadium in two days' time.

According to The Guardian, Murray has been selected ahead of cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins, who was favourite for the role, but pulled out of attending the ceremony.

Boxer Nicola Adams was also in the running to be named flag bearer, but Murray, who won his second Wimbledon title in July, has reportedly been given the nod.
