Rafael Nadal wins doubles gold in Rio

Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez win gold in the men's doubles final.

Rafael Nadal has won gold for Spain with partner Marc Lopez in the men's doubles competition at the Rio Olympics.

The pair defeated Romania's Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau 6-2 3-6 6-4 in 2 hours and 26 minutes on centre court at the Olympic Tennis Centre.

For world number four Nadal, the title is his second Olympic gold following his singles victory in Beijing in 2008 and his first ever major doubles title.

The 30-year-old arrived in Brazil a fortnight ago still unsure whether he would compete at the Games as he battled to overcome a wrist injury that had already blighted his season.

Earlier today Nadal progressed through to the semi-finals of the singles competition, setting the scene for a potential final showdown with defending champion Andy Murray.
