Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moves into the second round of the Shanghai Masters after defeating Tommy Robredo in three sets.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has booked his place in the second round of the Shanghai Masters after defeating Tommy Robredo in three sets.

The opening set was a closely-fought affair, with both players giving little away off their own service games.

Tsonga did have the opportunity to break three times in the ninth game, but his Spanish opponent saved the break points to keep the scores level. The set then entered a tie-break, which Robredo won 7-5.

Robredo failed to build on that advantage in the second set, as his French opponent began to get on top. Tsonga took the fourth game against the serve to move 3-1 ahead, and Robredo could not recover from that setback and lost serve again at 5-2 which allowed Tsonga to level the match.

Tsonga continued his form into the third set, taking an early break to move two games ahead. Robredo responded with an immediate break of his own, but Tsonga broke again to re-establish his lead.

Robredo threw away another break point that would have taken him to within a game of Tsonga at 3-1 down and his opponent took advantage, breaking again to take the set 6-2 and with it move into the next round.
