Andy Murray overcomes Jeremy Chardy to reach quarter-finals of Italian Open

Andy Murray reaches the quarter-finals of the Italian Open with a straight-sets win over Jeremy Chardy.

Andy Murray comfortably reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Open after beating Jeremy Chardy in straight sets in Rome on Thursday.

The two-time Grand Slam champion, who is competing in his first tournament since splitting with coach Amelie Mauresmo, earned a 6-0 6-4 win in just under an hour and 20 minutes.

The world number three demolished Chardy in the first set as he breezed through it in 30 minutes, not allowing his opponent to get a single game on the board.

The second set was less of a breeze, though, as it took Murray three games to create a break point, but he failed to convert on three opportunities.

Chardy ripped up the narrative of the match as he went a break up, but Murray broke back instantly to draw level on games at 4-4.

It took 48 minutes, but the Scotsman eventually wrapped up the second set and booked himself a spot in the final eight.
