Simona Halep recovers to earn spot in round four at French Open

2014 French Open finalist Simona Halep overcomes Naomi Osaka in three sets to earn a place in the last 16 at Roland Garros.

The sixth seed made a bad start to the third-round clash when losing serve three times in the opening set, allowing Osaka - ranked outside the world's top 100 - to grab an early foothold.

Osaka squandered a break point in the first game of the next set, perhaps acting as the turning point as Halep comfortably pushed on to level up the contest.

The deciding set swayed both ways, but in the end it was the favourite who prevailed by breaking her opponent's serve in the fourth and eighth games to get over the line.

Halep, a finalist two years ago, will face either Lucie Safarova or Samantha Stosur in the last 16 of the competition.
