Eugenie Bouchard to make "last-minute" decision over Olympics due to Zika virus

Eugenie Bouchard admits that she will make a "last-minute" decision on whether or not to pull out of the Olympics due to fears over the Zika virus in Rio de Janeiro.

Eugenie Bouchard has admitted that she will make a late decision about whether or not to represent Canada at the Rio Olympics due to concerns over the Zika virus.

Top-ranked tennis stars Milos Raonic, Simona Halep and Tomas Berdych have all pulled out of the Games due to health worries, while several golfers, including Rory McIlroy, have cited the same reason for withdrawing from their event.

The virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, has been linked to birth defects in babies, while there are also fears that it causes neurological problems in adults.

When asked about her participation in Rio, Bouchard told reporters: "I'm kind of a last-minute person, so I'm going to make a decision next week, I guess, the week before [the Olympics].

"It's just unfortunate because it would be my first Games, and to have a problem like [the Zika virus] kind of dampening the excitement of, potentially, your first Olympic Games, it really sucks, to be honest.

"It's something that I haven't been thinking about. I'm just going to wake up and make a decision."

The Olympics get underway in Brazil next month.
