US teenager Ginny Thrasher wins first Rio gold

The United States' Ginny Thrasher has claimed the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics with victory in the women's 10m air rifle.

The 19-year-old, who had never previously claimed a major triumph on the international stage, scored 208.0 to take top spot ahead of world champion Du Li.

China were expected to dominate the event, and they added bronze to Du's silver thanks to Yi Siling's solid performance.

Great Britain's hopes rested on Jen McIntosh, who finished 15th out of 51 competitors - the best-ever finish for a British woman.

McIntosh is back in action next week when taking part in the 50m rifle three positions event.
