Great Britain lose to New Zealand in women's rugby sevens semi-final

Great Britain's women miss out on a place in the inaugural Olympic rugby sevens final at Rio 2016 following a 25-7 semi-final defeat by New Zealand.

Great Britain's women have missed out on a place in the inaugural Olympic rugby sevens final following a 25-7 semi-final defeat at the hands of New Zealand at Rio 2016.

Katy McLean and Amy Wilson were sin-binned in the first half of the match as the Black Ferns made the most of the two-woman advantage to seal an ultimately comfortable victory.

Team GB captain Emily Scarratt told BBC Sport: "We weren't good enough in that game. We made too many mistakes and weren't clinical enough. We had a gameplan and we needed to stick to that.

"Now we have to dust ourselves off because there is still a lot to play for. Losing games is often the biggest thing to stir you on. We'll use that disappointment to give ourselves a kick up the bum."

Britain can gain bronze by beating Canada, who lost 17-5 to Australia in the other semi-final, in the third-place playoff later on Monday at 10.30pm BST.
