Nine-try Salford Red Devils move up to second place

Salford Red Devils beat bottom side Sheffield Eagles 53-34 at the AJ Bell Stadium to move into second place in the Super League Qualifiers.

Salford Red Devils have moved up to second place in the Super League Qualifiers courtesy of an entertaining 53-34 triumph over Sheffield Eagles.

Following a strong reception for retiring Salford star Adrian Morley, the hosts fed off the feel-good factor to take the lead inside five minutes.

Weller Hauraki was able to stretch over the line to get the Red Devils off the mark, but the Eagles soon wrestled control of the contest.

Cory Aston was the first visiting player to touch down and, straight from the restart, Menzie Yere helped himself to a try of his own.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Quentin Laulu-Togagae found a gap in the Devils' defence to extend his side's advantage, before Salford skipper Harrison Hansen touched down to keep the game well alive.

There was plenty of action still to come before the interval, with Rob Worrincy claiming a high kick to race over and Josh Griffin bursting through for a try apiece.

Momentum then swung Salford's way when Griffin claimed his second in quick succession, and Liam Hood - with his first Devils try - soon joined him to give the hosts a narrow lead.

Lama Tasi somehow crossed over for the half's ninth score, in what was an entertaining affair at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The second half began with Duane Straugheir touching down, before Niall Evalds and Scott Turner both joined the growing list of scorers.

Salford showed enough quality to open up a comfortable lead, though, with Michael Dobson slotting over a drop goal and Ian Thornley making the most of some growing pressure four minutes from time.

It was then left to George Griffin to round off the try scoring for the evening, leaving the Eagles at the foot of the division.
