Emile Heskey family "wiped out" by Hurricane Irma

Former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey says that several members of his family are missing in the Caribbean after Hurricane Irma swept through the region.

Former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has said that many of his family members are still missing after Hurricane Irma swept through the Caribbean.

The category 5 storm created a destructive path as it made its way through the Caribbean last week, destroying around 95% of all buildings on the island of Barbuda.

Heskey said that his parents were safe on the island of Antigua but are still waiting to hear from relatives in Barbuda almost a week on.

"My mum can't get hold of them," he told BBC News. "My mum and dad were fortunately lucky. They caught the tail end of it.

"But my mum's family is from Barbuda and they were basically wiped out. Everything is gone."

The rescue and clean-up effort in the wake of Hurricane Irma has been complicated by the presence of a new storm, Hurricane Jose, in the region.
