Liverpool fan group holds public meeting over stadium safe standing areas

Liverpool fans will be able to vote on whether they agree with safe standing areas after supporters' union Spirit of Shankly held a public meeting on the issue.

Liverpool fans will be able to vote on whether they support safe standing areas after a supporters' union held a public meeting on the issue.

Fan group Spirit of Shankly hosted the event, attended by Hillsborough family members, in Liverpool city centre on Saturday.

SOS chair Jay McKenna said the open meeting was a "significant" process in letting fans have their say, and will hold a ballot of their members to gauge opinion on the matter.

"It's a deeply emotive and sensitive issue and we have seen that today, with people sharing their personal experiences, but also people wanting to have their say," McKenna told Sky Sports News.

"I think that has been missing in the national conversation about rail seating - what Liverpool supporters think and what are their concerns, what are their questions why they might be in favour of it and why they might be opposed."

Celtic FC Supporter Liaison Officer John Paul Taylor also spoke at the meeting, sharing his experience of rail seating at Celtic Park.

He said: "I think just from the club's perspective it was all about safety. If fans were insistent they would stand at the match, we wanted to make it as safe as possible, so the rail seating option was considered to be the most successful way of doing this. We put that in and it has proved successful for us."

The vote will be closed on Friday, July 31 and results will be made public a few days later.
