Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain turns himself in over torture charges

Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain turns himself in to face charges of torturing an 11-year-old housemaid.

Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain has turned himself into police in relation to charges of torturing an 11-year-old housemaid.

The 29-year-old fast bowler reportedly went into hiding on September 6 when the young girl alleged that she had been abused by Hossain and his wife.

Hossain was jailed the day after his wife was arrested when his application for bail was rejected.

The cricketer's lawyer Kazi Nazibullah Hiru told AFP: "We appealed to the court that Shahadat should be released on bail for the greater interest of the country. We pleaded that he is not guilty as he was not present on the day the girl was allegedly beaten."

Hossain had reported the housemaid missing last month, and once found, the young girl, who doctors claimed had numerous injuries including a broken leg and black eye, told police that she had been beaten by the sportsman and his wife.

The bowler has been suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board from all forms of the game while the case is ongoing.
