Great Britain hockey captain Kate Walsh to leave hospital

Great Britain women's hockey captain Kate Walsh should leave hospital on Wednesday following surgery on a broken jaw and could make a dramatic return to the team.

Great Britain women's hockey captain Kate Walsh will leave hospital on Wednesday after having surgery on a broken jaw.

The 32-year-old will spend a third night in Royal London Hospital before making a return to the Olympic village.

Coach Danny Kelly said: "Kate is progressing really well. We are relatively optimistic she will be back in the village tomorrow, although that is not 100% confirmed.

"The surgeon has said that basically now her jaw has titanium plates in it so it is stronger than it was, there is now no medical risk to her playing. The real issue is her recovery from surgery and that is what we are monitoring."

Walsh suffered the injury making a tackle against Japan in their opening match of the tournament, colliding with a stick just four minutes from the full-time whistle.

Team GB possess a realistic chance of challenging for a medal, having won their opening two group matches.
