Andres Romero storms to thrilling BMW International Open victory

World number 837 Andres Romero of Argentina claims his first European Tour victory in almost 10 years at the BMW International Open in Munich.

World number 837 Andres Romero has claimed his first European Tour victory in almost 10 years at the BMW International Open in Munich.

The 36-year-old, in the field on a sponsors' invite, stormed to the top of the leaderboard with seven birdies over his last 11 holes to return a flawless 65 and win by one shot.

England's Richard Bland, who shared the overnight lead with Spain's Sergio Garcia, carded a three-under 69 on Sunday to finish one shot adrift of Romero.

Masters champion Garcia and Belgium's Thomas Detry also finished on 16-under at the Golfclub Munchen Eichenried.

Four players were tied for the lead at one stage, but Detry was unable to match Romero on the final hole in Germany.

Romero's only other European Tour win was the Players Championship of Europe in 2007, the year in which he finished third at The Open.
