Tiger Woods ruled out for the year

Tiger Woods will not compete again this year after undergoing surgery on his back.

The 39-year-old was forced to undergo an operation to remove a small disc fragment from his back, which was pinching against a nerve.

As a result, Woods will miss the rest of the calendar year and the chance to play in the Frys.com Open, Bridgestone America's Golf Cup and the Hero World Challenge.

Woods said on his official website: "This is certainly disappointing, but I'm a fighter. I've been told I can make a full recovery, and I have no doubt I will.

"I appreciate the fans' concern and support. This is unfortunate, but these things happen. I've been injured before and played again. It won't be any different this time."

The 14-time Major winner missed the cut at three of the four title competitions this season.
