Rory McIlroy wins PGA of America Player of the Year award

World number one Rory McIlroy has been named the PGA of America Player of the Year for 2014.

The Northern Irishman's season included two Major victories and success at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

He was the runaway winner ahead of Masters champion Bubba Watson, with Martin Kaymer, who won the US Open and Players Championship, third and three-time PGA Tour winner Jimmy Walker fourth.

McIlroy has also been presented with the Vardon Trophy for having the lowest scoring average (68.82), pipping European Ryder Cup teammate Sergio Garcia (68.95) to the prize.

It is the second time in three years that the 25-year-old has claimed both awards.
