Martin O'Neill: 'James McClean can play up front'

West Bromwich Albion winger James McClean may start up front for the Republic of Ireland against Slovakia, according to head coach Martin O'Neill.

Republic of Ireland head coach Martin O'Neill has hinted that James McClean will feature as a striker against Slovakia tonight.

Throughout much of his career, West Bromwich Albion's McClean has been used as a winger.

However, having occasionally turned out up front for his former club Wigan Athletic, O'Neill has revealed that the 26-year-old is now being considered for that role.

"James McClean has played up front before. I've seen him play for Wigan there and he's done exceptionally well," he told reporters.

McClean has been capped 35 times by Ireland, from which he has scored four goals.
