How Tottenham Hotspur could line up against Red Star Belgrade

Sports Mole looks at how Tottenham Hotspur could line up for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade.

Tottenham Hotspur will look to claim their first away win of the 2019-20 season when they meet Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino's men will be determined to put things right after conceding a 97th-minute equaliser away at Everton on Sunday afternoon.

They face a challenging task against a Red Star side that has only lost at home on three occasions in all competitions since May 2016.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the North London side could line up for this fixture.

Pochettino will want to use Danny Rose in the left-back role given that the Englishman is ruled out of next weekend's meeting with Sheffield United.

On the other side, Serge Aurier looks set to receive another chance to continue an improved spell of form since picking up criticism for his display during the 7-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Moreover, having missed out over the weekend due to a slight strain, Vertonghen looks set to return to the defence given that Pochettino continues to view him as the club's most dependable central defender, with Davinson Sanchez partnering the Belgian instead of Toby Alderweireld.

In a team often struggling for consistency, one constant for Pochettino this season has been the duo of Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele in midfield - a combination that gives Spurs more stability than when Harry Winks plays.

The decision to employ two holding midfielders comes at the expense of the often-favoured diamond formation, which was roundly picked apart by Bayern last month. In a hostile away environment, control in the middle is of paramount concern.

Further forward, Pochettino will be keen to give Dele Alli another chance to impress after the Englishman scored over the weekend to crown an improved performance following what has been a sticky start to the season for the 23-year-old.

Erik Lamela is another player likely to be unleashed against the Serbian champions given that the Argentine scored an attractive brace and looked dangerous when these two sides met in North London last month.

On the right, Pochettino faces a decision between Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min for when it comes to playing the second striker role behind Kane, who is expected to return from illness to start this game.

The obvious decision is the Korean international given that Son was sent off over the weekend for a horror tackle on Andre Gomes, which means that Moura is likely to be kept fresh for the meeting with the Blades next Saturday.
