Claude Puel criticises Charlie Austin following Southampton's goalless draw with champions Leicester City, claiming that the striker should have buried his big chance.

Southampton manager Claude Puel has admitted that he was left frustrated with his side's goalless draw against Leicester City after blowing a glorious chance to earn a third league win on the bounce.

Striker Charlie Austin, himself enjoying an impressive run of form, squandered a big opening to give the Saints a breakthrough at the King Power Stadium when played through on goal.

The former Queens Park Rangers man opted to chip the ball over Kasper Schmeichel but came out second best, with the contest eventually ending all square at the home of the Premier League champions.

Asked after the game if he was angry with Austin's miss, Puel said: "Yeah, because he made a bad decision. The solution is it is easier on the ground to put the ball in. It's a shame.

"I think we have made a very good game. It is very difficult to play against Leicester with big pressure and their pressing. It was important for us to put the ball on the ground and to play. I think we had many chances and opportunities.

"Leicester - sometimes off a mistake or a pass-back - also had them but I thought we could win this game at the end. We had many possibilities and it is a little disappointing to finish the game without a goal and without another result."

Southampton, who also have European football to contend with this term, climb to 10th in the Premier League after claiming their ninth point of the campaign.
