Juventus surrender top spot with defeat at Sevilla

Fernando Llorente scores the goal that gives Sevilla a 1-0 win over his former club Juventus.

Sevilla striker Fernando Llorente scored the goal that denied his former club Juventus a first-place finish in Group D of the Champions League this evening.

The Spaniard's second-half strike was enough to give the hosts a 1-0 win over the Old Lady, while Manchester City's victory over Borussia Monchengladbach saw the Sky Blues progress as group winners.

The visitors started on the front foot but were wasteful in the final third as Alvaro Morata blew two chances to put them ahead inside the first 10 minutes.

Sevilla put Juventus under pressure in the 14th minute when Yevhen Konoplyanka's 25-yard screaming shot whizzed past the post, narrowly missing Llorente's head in front of goal on the way.

Morata squandered another chance in the 25th minute after Paulo Dybala beat the offside trap and picked him out inside the box, the Spaniard shooting wide unchallenged.

The Italians almost took the lead in spectacular fashion early in the second half when Paul Pogba went for goal from 35 yards out, a dipping effort that Sergio Rico was forced to tip behind.

The decisive goal came in the 65th minute when Konoplyanka swung in a corner and Llorente rose highest in the box to thump a header beyond Gianlugi Buffon and break the deadlock.

Juve came within a lick of paint of the goal that would have kept them top of the group nine minutes from time when Dybala beat Rico with a vicious strike that came back off the crossbar.

Sevilla had a late goal ruled out for offside, but one proved enough to fire them into the Europa League in the end as the Spaniards pipped Monchengladbach to a third-place finish.
