Leonid Slutsky resigns as Russia coach after Euro 2016 early exit

Leonid Slutsky resigns as Russia's head coach after the 2018 World Cup hosts were knocked out of Euro 2016 in the group stages.

Leonid Slutsky has resigned as Russia's head coach after his team was knocked out of Euro 2016 in the group stages.

The 2018 World Cup hosts drew 1-1 against England but were then beaten 2-1 by Slovakia, and were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes against Wales before going on to suffer a 3-0 defeat, which ensured they finished bottom of Group B.

Vitaly Mutko, who is the head of the Russian soccer union and the country's sports minister, confirmed on Saturday that Slutsky will concentrate solely on coaching club side CSKA Moscow.

"Today we agreed that he will leave the head coach role," said Mutko, who added that Slutsky will continue "to share his knowledge" with the national team.

The 45-year-old leaves the post with a record of six wins, two draws and five losses from his 13 games at the helm.
