Raphael Varane ruled out of Euro 2016

France centre-back Raphael Varane is ruled out of Euro 2016 due to a thigh injury, with Adil Rami being called up in his place.

France centre-back Raphael Varane has been ruled out of Euro 2016 due to a thigh injury.

The 23-year-old suffered a grade two tear in his muscle during training for his club side Real Madrid last week ahead of the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

He was quickly ruled out of the European showpiece in Milan, and has now seen his hopes of representing the host nation at this summer's European Championships ended.

It is another setback for manager Didier Deschamps, who has already lost Mamadou Sakho after the Liverpool defender failed a drugs test last month.

France's likely centre-back partnership at the tournament will now be Laurent Koscielny and Eliaquim Mangala, although Barcelona's Jeremy Mathieu can also fill in in that position.

Varane, meanwhile, has been replaced in Les Bleus' squad by Sevilla's Adil Rami.

France will get the tournament underway against Romania at the Stade de France on June 10.
