Rangers rout Dumbarton to go clear

Rangers rout Dumbarton 4-0 to consolidate their position at the top of the Scottish Championship.

Rangers have moved three points clear of Hibernian at the top of the Scottish Championship as goals from Jason Holt, Martyn Waghorn, Nathan Oduwa and Andrew Halliday gave them a 4-0 win over Dumbarton this evening.

Wesley Foderingham gathered an early Steven Craig effort, before Mark Brown was forced to tip a Barry McKay effort around the post at the other end in an entertaining start to proceedings.

The home side should have taken the lead midway through the first half when Holt reached the byline and cut the ball back, but his pass somehow evaded all those waiting in the box.

Dominic Ball then had his appeals for a penalty waved away and James Tavernier saw his header from a McKay cross saved by Brown, but it remained goalless at the break.

After a delay getting the second half underway, Holt nodded his side ahead after feeding Tavernier on the wing and continuing his run to meet the full-back's cross.

Rangers then doubled their lead in spectacular circumstances when Waghorn collected a pass on the run and hammered the ball into the top corner.

Struggling Dumbarton barely threatened in the second half, leaving Rangers to wrap up the win when Oduwa tapped in from Lee Wallace's cut-back late on.

There was still time for Halliday to fire home a penalty in the dying moments after Steven Saunders had been sent off for bringing down Wallace in the box.
