Live Commentary: Newcastle United 3-3 Burnley - as it happened

Sports Mole's live text coverage of the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Burnley.

Newcastle United caretaker manager John Carver missed the chance to press his claims for the permanent job as Burnley earned a point in a dramatic 3-3 draw.

Steven Taylor headed Newcastle into an early draw, but the lead didn't last long as Paul Dummett's mistimed header into his own net gifted Burnley an equaliser.

Burnley would equaliser twice more to ensure they left St James' Park with a point as Danny Ings cancelled out Jack Colback's strike, before George Boyd made it 3-3 late on after Moussa Sissoko had put Newcastle ahead again.

It's another important point for Burnley in their battle to avoid the drop, while Carver starts his caretaker reign by missing the chance to record victory. Will he get another chance to lead this team? We'll surely find out more over the next few days. That's all from me today. Thanks for following our live coverage. Analysis and ratings from every game will be on the site soon. Goodbye.

It's all over at St James' Park, and we can finally catch our breath. A dramatic game ends with the two sides sharing the points as Burnley earn a draw after coming from behind on three occasions. Newcastle were the better side in the first half, but it was the visitors who dominated after the break. On balance, the draw was probably a fair result.

FULL TIME: NEWCASTLE 3-3 BURNLEY

Newcastle are finishing strongly in stoppage time, but a couple of poor decisions on the edge of the box allow Burnley to survive the spell. There's not too much time left in this game. You wouldn't be surprised if there was final dramatic moment.

YELLOW CARD! A tiring Boyd tracks back in an attempt to help out the defence, but he can only foul Haidara on the wing. It's a booking for the attacking midfielder.

Reid sends a long throw into the box but Ings can only send a flicked header straight at Alnwick after rising highest in the box. There will be five minutes added on.

CLOSE! Trippier targets the top corner from the free kick, and he's inches away from securing the points as his deflected effort drifts just over the crossbar.

Burnley are on the front foot in the closing stages. Barnes holds the ball up well before inviting a tackle from Williamson, who gifts the visitors a free kick in a dangerous position. Yellow card for the defender.

A dramatic afternoon takes another twist. Burnley equaliser for the third time as Ings keeps the move alive after a long ball forward before playing in Boyd, who fires a low effort into the bottom corner. Alnwick got a touch, and he'll probably feel he should have kept the ball out. Will there be a winner?

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 3-3 BURNLEY (BOYD)

YELLOW CARD! Newcastle are happy to work on the counter attack now as Sissoko storms past a couple of defenders before being brought down by a combination of Mee and Trippier, who are both booked. Sissoko has been superb once again today.

Carver is shouting out instructions from the touchline. He knows how big a win could be as he looks to beat off his rivals for the manager's job. Burnley really do deserve something from this game, but they're struggling to get forward now.

Newcastle are back in front against the run of play. After being forced to spend the majority of the second half on the back foot they take their first chance since the break. It's Sissoko who gets the goal as he drills home at the back post after Armstrong had flicked on Perez's cross. Can Burnley produce another response?

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 3-2 BURNLEY (SISSOKO)

Better from Alnwick as he comes off his line to collect a corner after Kightly had seen his effort from a tight angle deflect past the post. Dyche will be delighted with his side's performance, but he'll be desperate to get the win from this position.

CHANCE! Decent opening for the visitors as Boyd powers into space on the wing before crossing to Barnes, whose effort on the turn drifts just past the post.

It's all Burnley. You can sense the nerves from the home fans as another extended spell of Burnley pressure ends with Coloccini clearing the danger. Newcastle can't keep the ball further up the pitch, with Perez and Armstrong looking very isolated.

SUBSTITUTION: Carver makes his final change as the disappointing Gouffran makes way for Massadio Haidara.

At half time there seemed to be only one winner in this game, but it's Burnley who look the more likely to collect all three points now. Newcastle just can't keep the ball for an extended spell and Burnley's high tempo game is causing problems for the hosts.

YELLOW CARD! Poor from Janmaat as he picks up a silly booking for a trip on Kightly. Alnwick is then forced to punch clear Trippier's free kick under pressure in a congested box. Burnley are on top now.

Burnley get the equaliser they deserve! Just moments after Alnwick makes a good save to deny Boyd, the Clarets manage to beat the Newcastle goalkeeper. The impressive Kightly finds the space on the left to deliver an inviting cross which is headed in by Ings. It's a lovely finish from the Burnley forward. Will there be a winner?

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 2-2 BURNLEY (INGS)

YELLOW CARD! Ings picks up the first booking of the afternoon after going down too easily under pressure from Tiote. It certainly wasn't a penalty, but he's not happy with the yellow card.

OFF THE CROSSBAR! Jones delivers an inviting cross from a corner, but Dyche is left frustrated on the touchline as Mee rattles the crossbar with a powerful header. How are Burnley not level?

SUBSTITUTION: It's bad news for the hosts as Taylor limps down the tunnel. Mike Williamson comes on to join Coloccini in defence.

Newcastle are getting some of the bad luck Burnley had in the first half. Taylor is down receiving treatment after picking up a knock. The hosts will be desperate to keep the defender on the pitch.

SUBSTITUTION: Carver makes his first change as young striker Adam Armstrong comes off the bench to replace Rivere.

The likes of Jones and Arfield are pulling the strings for Burnley, which wasn't happening in the first half. Sissoko's influence on the game is no longer evident. Can Newcastle survive this extended spell on the back foot?

Dyche's half-time team talk has certainly had an impact. Burnley are on top at the moment, but they have to turn this pressure into an equaliser. Newcastle are starting to look rattled at the back.

OFF THE BAR! It's not going Burnley's way today. The visitors hit the woodwork twice in the space of just a few moments as Ings curls a brilliant effort against the crossbar before a Barnes header comes back off the post. Newcastle somehow manage to stay in front.

Great defending from Trippier to edge out Perez in the box, and Burnley then go up the other end to threaten when Boyd hits the ball over from Kightly's cross.

It's a bit scrappy at the start of the second half, but Burnley are looking lively on and off the ball. Dyche's need to hit back if and when they do enjoy a spell on top.

Newcastle will get the game back underway St James' Park.

If we were giving out a man of the first half award (we aren't) then Moussa Sissoko would be walking home as the winner. It's been a great display from the Frenchman in the centre of midfield. Burnley can't seem to stop his runs forward and they'll have to deal with him better after the break if they want to get back in the game.

If Carver wants the job on a full-time basis, he's going the right way about it. He's currently the favourite to replace Pardew permanently, and Newcastle have looked sharp under his guidance in the first half. They look well organised at both ends of the pitch and they should pick up the win if they continue to play like the have done.

Newcastle lead at St James' Park, and you have to say that Carver's side deserve to be in front. They've not created many clear chances, but Taylor and Colback took their respective opportunities well either side of a bizarre own goal from Dummett. Burnley will need to step it up if they are going to get something from the game.

HALF TIME: NEWCASTLE 2-1 BURNLEY

Newcastle aren't dominating in the way they were earlier in the game, but they still look comfortable at the back, with Barnes and Ings struggling to get on the ball further up the pitch.

Much better from Burnley. The visitors work the ball well to get Kightly in space, and he runs straight at the Newcastle defence before sending an effort just over the crossbar.

Gouffran does well to create space for himself on the wing, but his cross is comfortably collected by Heaton. The injuries in the first half mean there will be four minutes of stoppage time.

We've hit a rare quiet period in the game, with neither side appearing to be too eager to risky anything before the break. Sissoko is running the show in the middle of the park. Hull's midfielders can't get near him.

Riviere has been bright in the first half, but he misses a good chance to unleash a shot when a poor touch lets him down in the box. Moments earlier Janmaat had struck a cross over all of his temmates after finding space on the wing.

If Burnley are going to get anything from this game, these 11 players will have to do the job. Ings is still being kept quiet, and that really is a blow for the visitors. Newcastle look in control, but they won't be happy with such a slender lead.

SUBSTITUTION: Burnley are just not getting any luck this afternoon. Long stays down after being challenged by Riviere, and it looks like he has suffered a potentially serious knee injury with an awkward landing. The defender is forced off on a stretcher and Steven Reid replaces him. Burnley have now used all of their changes.

Riviere wins the praise of the home fans when he chases down a long ball forward, but he is left frustrated when he is penalised for a foul on Long.

SUBSTITUTION: Burnley are dealt another blow as Marney becomes the second player to head off with an injury. It's Michael Kightly who comes on to replace the midfielder.

Can Burnley respond again? They've struggled to threaten in attack since Barnes struck the post early on. They're starting to keep the ball a bit better, but Ings is not getting involved as much as the visitors would like.

Newcastle are back in front! It's a second goal in a week for Colback, and he finds the net in impressive style by using the space on the edge of the box to fire home a shot off the post. Heaton had absolutely no chance of stopping that shot,

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 2-1 BURNLEY (COLBACK)

Newcastle need to get over the Dummett mistake quickly. They've been the better of the two sides in the first half, and they were deservedly ahead before the own goal. Dyche will be hoping that the equaliser can push Burnley forward.

Good move from the hosts as Tiote slides a lovely pass into the path of Rivere, whose dangerous ball across the box is cleared away by Long.

Oh dear, it's a horrible moment for Newcastle. There doesn't appear to be any danger as Dummett prepares to head the ball back to Alnwick, but the defender somehow manages to lob his goalkeeper and gift Burnley an equaliser with a shocking mistake. Burnley can't believe their luck.

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 1-1 BURNLEY (DUMMETT OG)

SUBSTITUTION: Burnley are forced into an early change as injured captain Shackell limps off to be replaced by Kevin Long. Big blow for the visitors.

Just as Burnley were beginning to relieve the pressure they fall behind. A fifth corner of the game brings the goal as Colback's excellent delivery finds Taylor, who powers his header past Heaton. It's a great start for caretaker boss Carver.

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 1-0 BURNLEY (TAYLOR)

Perez delights the crowd with an excellent piece of skill on the wing, but Trippier manages to clear the ball away for another corner, which is cleared by the visitors. Can Newcastle turn this pressure into a goal?

After pressing high up the pitch in the early stages, Burnley are starting to invite pressure by dropping deeper. The visitors just can't seem to retain possession in midfield, where Sissoko is running the game at the moment.

CHANCE! Newcastle are on top now, but they miss a good opportunity to break the deadlock. Sissoko does well to pick out Janmaat on the right wing. The Dutchman's cross is delivered into a good area, but Riviere can only head over the crossbar.

A third corner for Newcastle is cleared as far as Gouffran, who attempts to pick out the bottom corner but watches Shackell make an excellent block. Important piece of defending from the Burnley centre back.

Dyche will be very happy with what he's seeing from Burnley in the early stages. Heaton makes a comfortable save from Gouffran's speculative effort, but the visitors are impressing with the pressure they are putting on the ball.

It's a very lively start at St James' Park. After surviving an early scare Newcastle get onto the front foot to force Burnley to clear a corner.

OFF THE POST! What a chance for Burnley. Newcastle off the visitors too much space and Ings plays in Barnes, whose powerful strike crashes against the post. The hosts breathe a big sigh of relief.

Here we go then. It will be Burnley who get the game underway.

Kickoff is less than 10 minutes away now. There's been plenty of speculation about the future of Danny Ings in recent weeks. His contract expires in the summer, but Burnley surely cannot risk cashing in on him this week. If the Clarets manage to avoid the drop, the striker is more than likely to play a key role.

How big a blow to Newcastle is it to lose Cisse? The striker can have no arguments with his suspension after stupidly elbowing Seamus Coleman in the win over Everton. He can be excellent and frustrating in equal measure, but the fact is that he does pop up with goals when it matters. The pressure is on Rivere and Perez to fill the void created by his absence.

PREDICTION: Some sides may struggle after a hectic few days, but you would expect Carver to follow Pardew's example in an attempt to get the best out of Newcastle. However, Burnley will look to be positive today after that morale-boosting draw with Man City. I'm going to start 2015 by sitting on the fence. 2-2.

STAT: Just one more statistic, I promise. You just cannot resist telling fans a piece of information which may or may not be useful. Burnley's players have run further than any other Premier League side this season, covering a combined average of 116 km (72 miles) per game.

STAT: A look back at previous seasons suggests that this could be a lucky date for Newcastle, who have never lost a Premier League game on New Year's Day (W4, D1).

RESULT: The first match of the day has finished at the Britannia Stadium. Ryan Shawcross handed Stoke the lead, but Radamel Falcao hit back to ensure that Manchester United claimed a 1-1 draw.

A quick reminder that you can follow live coverage of every Premier League game today by clicking on the fixture in the live scores box. It will surely be a dramatic start to 2015 as every side looks to kick off the year with a victory. Will there be big changes at both ends of the table?

If we didn't know it already, it's pretty safe to assume that Pardew will be confirmed as Crystal Palace's new manager. He is at Villa Park today to watch the Eagles take on Aston Villa. Whether you like him or not, there's more than a few Newcastle supporters who will be happy he's not on the touchline at St James' Park.

Despite the Pardew issue, Carver was keen to focus on football matters when speaking to the press, and the Newcastle caretaker boss admitted that he expects a tough task today.

"They are very well organised, difficult to break down, they've got good energy and the manager has done a fantastic job. I've seen what Sean has done with the team and it's going to be a tough challenge without a shadow of a doubt," Carver told reporters.

STAT: This is the first game between these two sides in the top flight since 17 April 1976, when Burnley recorded a 1-0 victory over the Magpies.

It comes as no surprise to see Sean Dyche name an unchanged side following the draw with Manchester City. That means Ashley Barnes leads the line once again alongside Danny Ings, who has been linked with Newcastle in recent weeks.

BURNLEY: Heaton; Trippier, Shackell (c), Keane, Mee; Arfield, Jones, Marney, Boyd; Barnes, Ings

SUBS: Gilks, Wallace, Kightly, Sordell, Reid, Jutkiewicz, Long

Carver makes two changes to the Newcastle side that beat Everton 3-2 on the weekend. Steven Taylor replaces Mike Williamson in defence, while Emmanuel Riviere comes in for Papiss Cisse, who begins his three-match suspension for the elbow on Seamus Coleman.

NEWCASTLE: Alnwick; Janmaat, Coloccini (c), S.Taylor, Dummett; Sissoko, Colback, Tiote, Gouffran; Riviere, Perez

SUBS: Woodman, Santon, Haidara, Williamson, Anita, Cabella, Armstrong

Burnley have made the trip north with renewed confidence after shocking the champions by coming from two goals behind to hold Manchester City to a 2-2 draw. It's the kind of result which can give struggling sides a big boost, and Sean Dyche will be eager to see his side build on that promising display. Another positive result could see them climb out of the relegation zone later this afternoon.

Carver may be looking at this game as an audition. It's been reported that Pardew's assistant is a genuine candidate to be named the new manager, and some positive results are the best way to prove your worth. After a hectic few days, Carver will be hopeful that he can inspire the players to produce their best this afternoon.

For a few weeks it looked like the drama had finally gone from Newcastle, but there was a fresh twist this week as the Alan Pardew era finally came to an end. The move has not yet been confirmed, but Pardew will be Crystal Palace manager sooner rather than later. The search for a new manager has started, and it will be John Carver who takes charge of the team today.

Good afternoon everyone. 2015 is finally here, and every Premier League side will be desperate to kick off the year with a victory. Burnley are the visitors to St James' Park on New Year's Day as they take on Newcastle United, who have dominated the headlines once again this week.
