Brisbane Roar snatch late victory over Newcastle Jets

Newcastle Jets are punished in added time as Brisbane Roar claim a late 2-1 victory.

Newcastle Jets' A-League woes continue after Brisbane Roar snatched a 2-1 victory at the death of their encounter at Hunter Stadium on Friday.

The Jets came close to opening the scoring within the second minute of the first half after Edson Montano delivered a header from the box, but his effort smashed against the crossbar.

At the other end, Corey Brown sent in a cross to find Jean Carlos Solorzano, but the forward's touch went just wide of the target.

Both sides struggled to create chances as the pace of the game slowed down, but Brisbane were able to make a rare opportunity count.

With around 10 minutes left to play in the first half, Solorzano scored his fourth goal in five games by heading the ball into the back of the net freely from a corner kick.

The Jets tried to respond before the half-time whistle when Mitch Cooper soared into the box, but he took too long to unleash a shot, which allowed goalkeeper Michael Theo to come off his line and smother it.

The tempo increased in the second half and while Brisbane had the majority of possession in the early stages, the home side had a chance to draw level.

Cooper managed to get on the end of a deflected cross, but Theo was at hand to make another impressive save to deny the midfielder's header.

Jets eventually found their way through when Theo came off his line to prevent Radovan Pavicevic's run, but the forward managed to get around the keeper and slot a side-footed shot into the back of the net past two defenders.

The home side took a stronghold of the game, but once again struggled to make their domination in possession count with any meaningful opportunities.

With three minutes of stoppage time to play, the Jets' hopes of picking up a point were dashed when they failed to defend a free kick delivered into the box by Thomas Broich.

The midfielder's effort went through everyone in the area and the ball took a deflection off Jets defender Allan Welsh and into the net to give the visitors a late triumph.
