Edwin van der Sar suggests that he would be open to returning to Manchester United in a director role.

Edwin van der Sar has suggested that he would be open to making a return to Manchester United in the form of a director.

The former goalkeeper enjoyed a hugely successful period under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2005 and 2011, winning the Champions League and claiming four Premier League titles.

Since retiring from football, Van der Sar has educated himself in business and become a successful chief executive at Ajax.

Speaking on the subject of a potential return to the Theatre of Dreams, Van der Sar told The Mirror: "Manchester United gave me the chance to make even bigger steps and develop at an even higher level.

"So of course I am interested in a position at United. But I think I need to learn a little bit more about myself as a chief executive at Ajax and develop myself even further.

"United is a fantastic club. So let's see what the future brings."

Many United fans believe that Van der Sar should step into the role of Ed Woodward, whose popularity is at rock-bottom after overseeing a failure of transfer policy since 2013.

The Red Devils, who are just two points above the relegation zone, resume Premier League action against leaders Liverpool at Old Trafford on October 20.
