Scholes wants Kroos or Modric at United

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has claimed that his former team are still short in the middle of the park, despite spending a world-record £89m to re-sign Paul Pogba in the summer transfer window.

Scholes, whose former club have lost their last two games in all competitions, has claimed that Real Madrid duo Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are the type of players that Jose Mourinho should be looking to acquire.

Kroos was reportedly close to joining Man United before he moved to Real Madrid from Bayern Munich, while it is understood that the 20-time Premier League champions are long-term admirers of Modric.

"I think Mourinho should go into the market for a controlling midfielder, who can control where Paul goes and control the game," the 41-year-old told BT Sport. "I think they still need that type of player. A Luke Modric or a Toni Kroos, and I think these players are available. Paul Pogba would be a lot better playing alongside one of them."

Man United will attempt to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to Watford on Sunday afternoon.
