Report: West Ham United to bid £20m for Manchester United's Chris Smalling

West Ham United are reportedly planning to table a £20m bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling in the summer transfer window.

The England international has been a regular starter under manager Louis van Gaal this season and has kept 14 clean sheets in the Premier League.

According to the Brentwood Gazette, though, West Ham will attempt to pry the centre-back away from Old Trafford with a summer bid.

The East London club are believed to be targeting high-calibre players as they prepare to begin a new era at the Olympic Stadium for the 2016-17 season.

Only two points separate these two clubs in the league this season, with United sitting fifth and the Hammers residing one place below.
