Christian Eriksen's proposed move to Manchester United reportedly broke down due to a promise he made to Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy that he would never join another English club.

The Denmark international has been heavily linked with a move away from Spurs this summer after outlining his desire to "try something new" earlier in the window.

Recent reports suggested that United were in advanced talks over a cut-price £50m deal, but the Daily Mail claims that Eriksen was unwilling to leave for a Premier League rival.

The 27-year-old is thought to have made the promise to Levy in 2017 when he was being linked with a switch to London rivals Chelsea.

Eriksen reportedly favours a move to Spain amid interest from Atletico Madrid, while Real Madrid have also been linked with the playmaker this summer.

Los Blancos have since turned their attention to Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek, but could they still revive their interest with the Spanish window not closing until September 2.
