Wayne Rooney bids farewell to Manchester United

Wayne Rooney has offered his thanks to former club Manchester United following his return to Everton earlier this afternoon.

Rooney moved to Old Trafford as a teenager in 2004 and went on to win every trophy available to him during his time at the club, leaving as their all-time record goalscorer with 253 in 559 appearances.

The 31-year-old fell down the pecking order following the arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer and subsequently rejoined boyhood club Everton on a two-year deal today, and he took to Instagram to bid farewell to United following his record-breaking 13-year stay.

Just want to say a massive thank you to everybody at @manchesterunited. Thanks to the boards over the years, the managers and coaches I've played under, the staff I've worked with, the team mates I've played alongside, and finally the amazing fans that I've been lucky enough to have played for. Thanks for the memories!

Rooney won 16 trophies during his time at Old Trafford, including five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.
