Luke Shaw keen for run in Manchester United team

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw vows to prove his worth to Jose Mourinho after an inconsistent start to the new season.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has vowed to prove his worth to Jose Mourinho as the left-back targets a run in the Portuguese's first selection.

Shaw missed the majority of last season with a broken leg, but completed a full pre-season for Man United and started the new campaign as part of Mourinho's first XI.

The full-back drew criticism for his performance against Watford in September, however, and did not even made the bench for last weekend's Premier League clash with Chelsea.

However, Shaw, who played the full 90 minutes of Man United's 1-0 win over Manchester City in the League Cup on Wednesday night, is confident that he will improve as the season develops.

"It's normal you're frustrated on Sunday because I would have loved to play in that game [against Chelsea] but it obviously wasn't meant to be and at the end of the day it is the manager's decision," Shaw told reporters.

"Obviously with the injury with Eric [Bailly] now it might be my time to step up and show the manager what I can do and that he can trust me. The first half [against City] wasn't the best of mine. I thought I did good but on some of the crosses I wasn't maybe getting tight enough, but he [Jesus Navas] is a very quick player and it was quite tough.

"But I came out in the second half and I felt much better. I was closing him sharply, we made sure he got no crosses in and I felt really good. Hopefully I play on Saturday and get another 90 minutes and a good result with that."

Man United will welcome Burnley to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
